Small Marquetry Commode, Louis XV Style – Mid-19th Century

Elegant Parisian chest of drawers in Transition style, in rosewood and palisander marquetry, opening with three drawers in a curved front. Each drawer is finely inlaid with rosewood framed by a blackened wood stringing, and adorned with gilt-bronze foliate pulls, a working lock, and a chased bronze keyhole escutcheon. The lower rail is highlighted by rich bronze mounts depicting scrolling foliage, while the sides, also undulating, feature butterfly-wing marquetry crafted from rosewood leaves. The curved rosewood uprights are enhanced with a wide rosewood stringing running along the edge and extend into convex feet embellished with bronze sabots. The whole is crowned with a Griotte red marble slab with a corbin-beak edge, which gracefully follows the lines of the piece.
