Impressive bronze cassolette with a brown patina, dating from the Napoleon III period.
It is in the Neoclassical style, shaped like a ewer, with extensive and highly detailed decoration. It rests on a black Belgian marble base.
The foot is flared in the antique style with gadrooned decoration. Above a wide Louis XVI ribbon, there is a lively Bacchanalian scene with putti celebrating the triumph of the infant Bacchus. A fluted decoration adorns the neck, accompanied by a wide garland of fruit in which a very finely detailed serpent is depicted. The handle is made of intertwined branches and is openwork. A large antique-style mask, resembling a faun's head, decorates the front.
The quality of the bronze is superb, and the chasing work is quite exceptional, the work of a renowned firm, probably Barbedienne.
The patina is superb, in good condition, and deep. There is a small chip on the marble base.
A cassolette of great finesse. A beautiful, high-quality bronze sculpture.
Dimensions:
34 cm high and 12 cm square at the base.
