Late 18th Century Gilt Bronze Clock With Adonis
Elegant
gilt bronze clock, mounted on an ebonized wooden base and featuring a
protective glass bell. The clock is decorated with a statuesque figure on the
left, identifiable as Adonis, lover of the goddess Venus, with typical hunter's
attributes; a hunting dog and a spear are also depicted on the right.
Furthermore, the base of the clock features a clearly classical scene,
featuring a reclining Adonis and presumably Diana, the goddess of the hunt,
waking him with a bow in her hand. The clock face is decorated with triumphal
motifs and features Roman numerals. The original silk-thread suspension
mechanism chimes the hours and half-hours; the mechanism is intact and
currently being overhauled. This is a clock of great class and elegance,
capable of adding a touch of refinement and antiquity to any decor. French
manufacture from the Neoclassical period, around the end of the 18th century.
