Faschinen Messer - Saxon Sword, Model 1855, By Sedlmayr.

Saxon Fascine Knife, Model 1855, Infantry Regiment "Kronprinz" (5th Royal Saxon) No. 104. Manufacturer: Sedlmayr – monogram HZ.

This item is a Saxon Fascine Knife, Model 1855, a regulation edged weapon of the Kingdom of Saxony, attributed by marking to the Infantry Regiment "Kronprinz" (5th Royal Saxon) No. 104.

This type of weapon was primarily intended for infantry and pioneer troops for field work (fascines, entrenchments), while also serving as a secondary weapon. The handle, made of solid brass, features a transversely fluted grip, typical of the Saxon 1855 model. It is assembled with rivets, still clearly visible, attesting to its original construction. The straight guard, also made of brass, ends in slightly outwardly curved tips, a regulation shape without ornamentation, characteristic of a strictly utilitarian weapon. The uniform patina of the whole piece testifies to long and consistent wear. The straight, wide, gladius-type blade bears several significant markings. These include the Sedlmayr maker's mark, as well as the monogram “HZ,” corresponding to the military acceptance inspector. These marks, combined with Saxon acceptance marks, confirm manufacture conforming to the regulatory standards of the mid-19th century. The surface condition shows traces of use and old oxidation, without major structural damage, suggesting actual but not excessive use. The scabbard consists of a body of black leather stitched lengthwise, fitted with a brass chape and locket. It bears a stamped marking “104 R.6.120.” The inscription can be interpreted as a regimental marking indicating the regiment number (104), a subunit (company or reserve), and an individual weapon number. This type of regimental marking reinforces the precise attribution of the piece and constitutes an element of great historical value. As a whole, this Faschinenmesser represents an authentic and complete example of a regulation 19th-century Saxon edged weapon, combining an identified maker, clear acceptance marks, and an explicit regimental attribution. It is a key object for the study of Saxon infantry weaponry, illustrating both military standardization and the practical use of field weapons before and during the German Imperial period.
