Officer's Sword Of The Imperial Guard, Napoleon III
Artist: Manufacture Impériale De Châtellerault
A beautiful officer's sword of the Imperial Guard, Model 1860. This sword is a true symbol of the military nobility of the Second Empire. This example is in remarkable condition, notably retaining all its gilding, which is rare.
BLADE: It is a triangular blade with three hollowed sides, from the Imperial Manufactory of Châtellerault. On the large face, at the ricasso, is the inscription = Mre Imple de Chatt / O of the Guard / Model 1860
(= Imperial Manufacture of Châtellerault / Officer of the Guard / Model 1860).
On the two smaller faces, at the ricasso, are the starred "B" hallmark of G. BISCH, chief controller from 1864 to 1870, and the "F" hallmark of GH DUROUSSEAU DE FAYOLLE, director from September 15, 1862, to March 2, 1873. The blade is in near-perfect condition. Blade length = 80.3 cm.
GUARD : This is the model with a folding counter-guard. On the large guard are the grand imperial arms depicted on a hand of justice, a scepter, and four flags. The folding counter-guard bears the inscription "GARDE IMPERIALE" and a decoration of laurel and oak branches. Quillon decorated with laurel branches, knuckle bow decorated in its center with the imperial monogram against a background of thunderbolts.
POMMEL : It is in the shape of an inverted cone and decorated with an eagle with outstretched wings.
GRIP : It is made of buffalo horn and ends in two ferrules, one joining the pommel and the other joining the quillon, which includes the control button for the counter-key.
SCABBARD : It is made of black leather, with a scabbard opening and chape in gilt brass. 20 centimeters from the chape, a small, barely visible old repair which I have photographed in close-up.
A beautiful weapon that exemplifies the last vestiges of French military grandeur in the 19th century.
Shipping costs: France €30, Europe €40
