Boutis Quilt In White Batiste - Provence, Circa 1850
Circa 1850, Provence. A beautiful "boutis" foot warmer, or Marseilles embroidery quilt dating from the late Louis-Philippe period. A very fine and lightweight quilt in white cotton batiste, embroidered in boutis using the running stitch. The design features a traditional layout with a large reserve, a small latticework border, and a central rosette. The undulating interlacing of daisies is set in four spandrels adorned with stylized cornucopias. The reversible boutis quilt has its original flounces in finely pleated cotton muslin. There is some very slight yellowing, difficult to see in person. The cotton batiste and the boutis work remain in excellent condition, without stains or holes. Very good overall condition. Dimensions: 126 cm x 155 cm overall. The central boutis measures 110 m x 83 cm plus 22 cm of muslin.
