Thisimposing veneered and inlaid wooden trumeau was made in Genoa, Italy, in the18th century. The Baroque structure shows some conservative modificationscarried out in the 19th century, including the back. It consists of a lowersection with drawers and an upper glazed section, closed by two front doors andtwo lateral doors.The lowersection, shaped on both the front and sides and resting on four Baroque bracketfeet, features three large drawers and two smaller upper drawers. The drawersand sides are veneered in rosewood and decoratedwith bois de rose string inlay. The key escutcheons are richly adorned withfinely chased gilt bronze applications featuring phytomorphic motifs and a pairof symmetrical ram profiles. Further enhancing the structure of the piece isthe use of end-grain wood for the lower band, the bands separating the drawers,the molding dividing the lower and upper sections, and the upper cornice of theglazed section. The latter has a curvilinear and broken profile with a centralpediment, creating movement and lightness in the overall architecturalcomposition.The uppersection is divided into compartments with shelves, accessible through two frontglass doors and two side-opening doors. Here as well, the key escutcheons aredecorated with gilt bronze mounts featuring phytomorphic motifs and rams,smaller in size. The uprights are veneered in rosewood and embellished with bois de rose stringinlay.Thistrumeau can be used in a versatile manner as a sideboard, bookcase, or displaycabinet, and is suitable for placement in various settings such as diningrooms, studies, salons, bedrooms, or entrance halls.
