The two pieces complement each other rather than repeat the same pattern. One bowl shows a woman walking with a basket balanced on her head among flowering plants, the other a man with birds in the branches. The figures are treated in a charmingly naïve style typical of Burmese silver of this period.
The interiors were originally fire-gilded. After more than a century of use most of the gilding has been polished away, remaining mainly in the recesses and around the centres. The silver has been tested and shows a fineness above 900, consistent with traditional Burmese alloys.
Condition: excellent antique condition. No dents, splits, repairs or distortions to rims or bases. Normal age-related surface wear and partial loss of interior gilding only. The relief remains crisp and the bowls stand square and level.
A decorative and substantial pair for collectors of Asian silver or for use as elegant serving bowls or small centrepieces.
Dimensions: height 7.8 cm; diameter 12.7 cm; combined weight 226.15 g (tested silver of at least 900 fineness).
