Object description :

"Imperial Russian 56 Zolotnik Gold Orthodox Cross, St Petersburg 1864"

This is an authentic Imperial Russian Orthodox cross pendant in solid 56 zolotnik gold (approximately 14ct), bearing crisp pre-kokoshnik hallmarks struck in St Petersburg and dated 1864. For collectors of antique Russian jewellery, these early marks are everything: the St Petersburg city emblem with “1864” clearly visible, the “56” standard confirming the traditional Russian gold fineness, and the initial mark “ЭЯ”. Together they place the piece precisely within the Imperial assay tradition, giving it the kind of documentary certainty that later, more generic devotional crosses often lack.

The artistry is quietly superb. The front presents the Crucifixion in a slender, icon-like style, set against a finely matte, textured ground and framed by a clean beaded border. Above the head appears the Old Slavonic «ІНЦІ» — the Russian church form meaning “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”, a detail notably less common than the Latin INRI and immediately recognisable to those who know Orthodox objects.

The reverse carries the traditional benediction «СПАСИ И СОХРАНИ» (“Save and protect”), framed by graceful foliate scrollwork. The suspension ring is well made and decorated all around with engraved foliage, allowing the cross to sit beautifully on the chest and hang securely from a chain. It reads as a complete, coherent design — devotional, historic, and genuinely wearable.

A meaningful heirloom and a truly appropriate gift for someone who values Russian Orthodox tradition and authentic Imperial craftsmanship.
