16th Pair Of Alabaster Sculptures From Mechelen, Allegories
A pair of small alabaster sculptures depicting two allegories, Mechelen, 16th century.
The sculptures depict the allegory of Abundance, with a horn full of fruit, and the allegory of Summer, holding a sheaf of wheat in her arms.
Mechelen was an important artistic center in the Netherlands, influenced by the presence of the court of Margaret of Austria at the beginning of the century.
Margaret of Austria invited renowned artists and humanists to her court, introducing the Renaissance to the country and fostering substantial economic development. Alabaster production reached its peak in the third quarter of the 16th century, until the city was sacked and burned by the Spanish in 1572. Most of the production consists of the well-known reliefs depicting religious scenes. However, there is a smaller secular production, often linked to the depiction of allegories.
One of the two sculptures, Summer, has a gap in the base on the back.
