Saint Anthony Of Padua Attributed To Tommaso Conca
Artist: Tommaso Conca
This arched painting within a contemporary frame made specifically for the canvas is certainly a model for the creation of a larger altarpiece, probably for a private chapel. Depicted here is one of the most evocative moments in the life of Saint Anthony of Padua, when the Baby Jesus appeared to him in prayer. The painter's masterful softness in the priest's habit and the drape on the console table convey all the pictorial lightness of this period. The two fluted columns wrapped in green fabric act as a backdrop. The color scheme and pictorial technique attribute the work to an artist active in Rome from the second half of the eighteenth century, Tommaso Conca (1734-1822).
