Nuremberg Chest, 17th Century
The chest was the quintessential piece of furniture in the Middle Ages. It was used to store all sorts of objects: for precious items, chests were made of iron, as is the case with this one. It may have been used to transport soldiers' pay on campaign. It is reinforced with hinges and corners and features a false keyhole on the front. The mechanism, fixed under the lid, covers its entire surface with intricate gears that operate numerous bolts with a single turn of the key. The parts of this mechanism are crafted with both elegance and care. Inside the chest, a small compartment, itself lockable, secures the most confidential items. Sturdy handles on the side allow it to be carried. This serves both as a means of preserving the iron and as a decorative element.
