Originating in the 1950s, the fractal resin technique involves creating art objects with a fragmented and iridescent appearance through high-temperature firing, successive polishing, and various chemical processes. It reached its peak in the 1970s, during which it was used to create furniture, paperweights, lighting fixtures, sculptures, and more.
This piece can be attributed to Pierre Giraudon (1923-2012). A biologist by training, he initially used resin for scientific purposes, creating inclusions of plants and animals. He then began creating art objects in fractal resin, participating in the first Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1956. Alongside his personal work, he also collaborated with artists such as César, Arman, and Dalí, as well as with major fashion houses like Dior and Hermès.
