James Gillray - Charming-well Again - Humphrey Edition 1804 Hand-colored Etching
Artist: James Gillray
A fine satirical etching by James Gillray (1756-1815), one of the greatest British caricaturists of the 18th century. Published on January 28, 1804, in London by H. Humphrey, it belongs to a humorous series inspired by the drawings of the Reverend John Sneyd, ironically illustrating contemporary medical practices. The scene depicts a convalescent patient seated at a table, served by a liveried servant. The title, with Gillray's characteristic sarcasm, underlines the relief provided by the medical treatments then in use—purgatives, bloodletting, and emetics. The whole is typical of the artist's expressive and lively style, blending fine line work with social observation. A hand-colored etching, presented under glass, in a black molded frame with gilt highlights and a matte black mat. The framing was done in the 1950s, on the occasion of its acquisition from the London gallery Vicars Brothers Ltd. On the back, two labels mention the original publisher and the gallery.
