"Helmet For The Carabinier Troops Of The Imperial Guard, Model 1858, Second Empire."
Imperial Guard Carabiniers Trooper Helmet, Model 1858, Second Empire. 32152-1. Hammer-forged brass shell, formed from two halves joined by a staple. Pierced at the top with two suction cup holes (Ø 2.5 cm). Height of the shell: 14.5 cm. Brass visor, 5.5 cm wide. Its outer curve has a very obtuse, projecting angle in the middle; it is edged with a 7 mm wide circle of nickel silver, mounted on top of the visor, and fixed at each end by a rivet. Black waxed sheepskin lining. Brass neck guard, similarly rimmed to the visor, adorned with three nickel silver studs on each side. Tinplate band, stamped around its entire perimeter with two raised lines (4 mm wide). Height at the sides: 3.6 cm. It features a rounded point in the center, 10.3 cm high, which joins the crest and is secured by a hemispherical-headed iron screw. The two ends of the band are riveted to the helmet's shell, near the chin straps. A stamped brass emblem, depicting a pomegranate surrounded by palm fronds (7.8 cm high; 7.2 cm wide at its widest point), is attached to the center of the band by two hardened iron screws with inward-facing heads. The chin strap is 20 cm long, and the ringed section is 14.5 cm long. The first link is 4.6 cm wide, and the bottom link is 2.2 cm wide. A flat brass hook in the center of each chin strap secures the rings. The right chin strap ends with a brass chain and hook, the left with a simple hook. A round, stamped iron rosette (5.5 cm in diameter) with a projecting outer molding is embossed in the center with a radiant sun. This rosette is connected to the chin strap rings by two brass rings and attached to the helmet bowl by means of a five-pointed brass star (2.6 cm in diameter), to the back of which a threaded rod is soldered through the bowl. The crest consists of two fins and a mask, made of brass. Each fin features a curvilinear triangle, the base of which joins the bowl by means of a scalloped rim, 1.3 to 1.7 cm high, decorated with small gadroons. The fins are stamped in relief with a border of acanthus leaves and, in the center, a laurel branch. Each fin is attached to the bomb by means of two iron screws with hemispherical heads. Maximum height of the fins: 13.2 cm. The mask serves to join the two fins at the front, to which it is welded by its edges, which are decorated with netting. It terminates squarely at the top and bottom with a bracket that fits under the band and through which the same screw passes. (Width of the mask: 3.5 cm at the top; 2.2 cm in the middle; 4 cm at the bottom). It is fixed at the bottom by the screw at the top of the band. Independently of the weld to the mask, the two fins are joined together by a welded tinplate partition. The caterpillar is made of scarlet horsehair mounted on a steel wire. It extends beyond the crest by approximately 5 cm (from the 1858 regulations, the crest was trimmed to approximately 6 cm). The interior lining is made of black waxed sheepskin, cut into ten wolf's teeth, each fitted with a metal eyelet. The total height of the helmet is 36 cm. France. Second Empire. Good condition, the bowl is slightly dented, the lining of the neck guard is missing, and the interior lining shows wear.
