Venetian Carved And Giltwood Frame – Late 16th / Early 17th Century
Elegant Venetian frame in finely carved spruce wood, gilded in water-gilding, dating from the late 16th to the very early 17th century (circa 1580–1620). The frame features a rich Mannerist decoration with large scrolling leaves, full volutes, and two confronted birds carved along the sides – a rare and highly characteristic motif of Venetian high-period craftsmanship.
The surface displays an exceptionally dense fine-point punchwork, typical of Venetian workshops around 1600. The original water gilding shows bole tones ranging from deep red to very dark brown, as used by Venetian gilders of the period.
Despite wear consistent with age, small losses, old restorations and reintegrations, the frame retains remarkable charm and strong visual presence. Originally intended for a devotional painting or small domestic altar, it remains an important example of early Venetian carved work.
Measurements:– Overall: 50 × 67 cm– Sight: 21.5 × 27 cm
