A beautiful carved bone plaque or chasse figurine depicting a praying monk or apostle, in the German Romanesque (Meuse) style.
Finely carved, with intensely simple lines.
Probably a decoration for a casket, to which it was secured with three nails.
A splendid object, difficult to date but certainly evocative, conveying the full sentiment of an era likely far removed from it.
We believe it dates to the 1870s/1880s.
Dimensions: 14 x 4 x 2 cm
