Bronze brooch (traces of gilding) with a cherub's face embossed in high relief.
An Italian or French work from the late 15th and early 16th centuries, in true Renaissance style.
The brooch is structured around a double octagon: in the central octagon, the cherub's beautifully embossed face rises, and despite its miniature size, it features well-defined features and expertly crafted lines.
The expression, halfway between wise and mocking, perfectly embodies the spirit of these creatures, especially as idealized during the Renaissance: cherubs conceived as celestial children, who with naive wisdom and lively knowledge protect and populate the kingdom of heaven.
It's not easy to convey this intention in such a small face... a true Renaissance jewel, which has survived in excellent condition.
The outer octagon slopes obliquely, creating facets, each with a flower at the center.
It should be noted that the brooch itself is made of three assembled pieces: the front face in cast bronze, the cherub's face embossed on copper and then applied, and finally the back, in bronze
