At twenty-five, he chose freedom as his sole horizon and set off on the roads of Europe and then the United States, armed with his brushes and sketchbooks. Back in France, he divided his time between the Mediterranean light and the winters of Megève. He eventually caught the eye of André Roussard around 1970, the beginning of a fruitful collaboration that brought his work to prominence in France, Europe, and the United States, eventually leading to his inclusion in major collections. A master of color, Delval composes his canvases with broad swathes of color and expertly controlled perspectives, giving each painting a unique depth and poetry.
