Lucien Madrassi (1881–1956), Allegory Of Peace

Lucien Ludovic Madrassi (Paris, 1881 – Paris, 1956) was a French painter, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator, the son of the famous Italian-born sculptor Luca Madrassi. Trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Raphaël Collin, Gabriel Ferrier, Pierre Leroy, and Gervais, he received a solid academic education that profoundly shaped his entire body of work. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in the early 20th century, becoming a member in 1906 and quickly earning an honorable mention.

Throughout his career, Madrassi undertook numerous trips that fueled his inspiration. After several stays in Algeria and Tunisia, he traveled throughout French West Africa—notably Senegal, Mauritania, and Sudan—where he produced numerous portraits, genre scenes, and ethnographic studies. His Orientalist works were highly successful, and several were acquired by the French government and the City of Paris. In 1921, a major solo exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs celebrated this period of his work.

Appointed official painter to the Navy in 1925, he also produced numerous seascapes and travel scenes. His work, characterized by great mastery of drawing, a refined sense of light, and particularly meticulous execution, remains representative of French academic painting from the first half of the 20th century. An Officer of the Legion of Honor, he died in Paris in 1956, leaving behind a substantial body of work consisting of paintings, drawings, pastels, and illustrations that are now held in several French public collections.
