Follower Of Nicolas Largillière (1656-1746), Presumed Portrait Of Voltaire's Mother
Artist: Suiveur De Nicolas Largillière (1656-1746)
Follower of Nicolas Largillière (1656-1746), 19th century
Presumed portrait of Voltaire's mother
Oil on canvas
Dimension: 81 x 65 cm
Dimension with frame: 95 x 77 cm
Notethe frame is in Louis XVI period carved and gilded wood and stamped by Antoine Levert reçu maitre à Paris en 1774.
You can find some frames identical to the one shown on the internet.
Our portrait appears in the 2nd sale of Eugène Kraemer's collection, lot 47 (see last photo).
The portrait is presumed to be Voltaire's mother, which would coincide with the fact that the portrait I am offering comes from Voltaire's descendants.
It is common for families to have an ancestor's portrait redone when they split up as a result of an inheritance, and I think this is one of those cases. This painting was certainly done at the very beginning of the 19th century by a very talented painter.
