Chapotot, Horizontal Dial, C. 1690

Chapotot, Silver Octagonal Horizontal Sundial, Paris, circa 1687-1691. This silver octagonal horizontal sundial is signed "Chaptot à Paris" and dates from between 1687 and 1691 due to the discharge mark for small items on the back of the instrument. The dial measures 5.3 × 6.3 cm. The plate is engraved with three hour scales for latitudes of 40, 45, and 50 degrees, in Roman or Arabic numerals. The gnomon with its bird motif is adjustable in height from 40 to 60 degrees, depending on the latitude. The gnomon and the compass are beautifully engraved with a design of leaves and buds, and the compass is decorated with a large acanthus leaf motif on the back of the compass. The names and latitudes of 20 French and European cities are also inscribed on the back. The dial is preserved in its original case. It is in very good condition.
