Eugenio Lucas (1817-1870) acknowledged Velázquez and Goya as his masters, who influenced his style throughout the centuries. Our painting, with the elegance of the former and the swirling brushstrokes of the latter, shows figures arriving on horseback, others conversing before striped and bannered tents.
It was considered so precious that moldings were attached around the edge to allow as much of the painting as possible to be visible within the frame.
It bears a kind of monogram in red pencil on the back.
