The antique paintings and Seascape Paintings category presents a beautiful seascape, an oil painting on canvas from the early
20th century. The artwork depicts a rough sea, with high waves crashing powerfully against reddish rocks on the right.
This Art Deco piece is painted with vigorous brushstrokes and great attention to the movement of the water, while the white foam
of the waves creates a strong contrast. The antique painting conveys energy and the force of nature.
The seascape is dated 1927 and signed lower right by Léon Galand, a French painter known particularly for his marine scenes,
coastal landscapes, and naturalistic subjects.
Léon Laurent Galand (1872–1960) was born in Montpellier, France, in 1872 and died in 1960 in Clichy-la-Garenne.
He studied under Cormon, Gustave Moreau, and Blanch. Throughout his career, he exhibited regularly in Paris at the
Salon des Artistes Français, earning numerous recognitions and medals, including a gold one in the early 1900s.
Many of his works are preserved in the Montpellier Museum. He was awarded the Légion d’Honneur.
The antique painting comes with a gilded frame, contemporary to the artwork.
Both the elegant frame and the antique canvas have been professionally and carefully cleaned and restored.
This Seascape Painting, Sea with Waves and Rocks, Art Deco Oil on Canvas from the 20th Century is part of the
Bisgart Collection and can be viewed at our gallery, where many other artworks are displayed.
