The round box features a superb, extensive rocaille decoration worked in repoussé.
A rocaille leather motif extends down the body of the box, which is also decorated with flowering branches.
The same leather motif is repeated symmetrically around the edge of the lid. Its upper section is adorned with broad acanthus leaf scrolls, curves and counter-curves, flowering branches, reeds, etc. The center is decorated with a rich cartouche bearing the monogram MB (?).
Both parts are hallmarked:
. Minerva 1st standard (pre-1973) for 950/1000 silver
. Maker's mark: H & Cie with a rose branch and a star for Hénin et Compagnie, active from 1875 to 1893 and then from 1893 to 1933.
Highly talented, Hénin et Cie was a subcontractor for Odiot, along with other prestigious silversmiths such as Granvigne and Puiforcat.
Magnificent, large box, remarkable for its superb rocaille motif, typical of the eclecticism in vogue during the reign of Napoleon III.
