Antoine FERRARI (1910-1995) The Painter's Studio Oil on canvas, signed lower right Dimensions: 60 x 80 cm Dimensions with frame: 94 x 73 cm Biography Antoine Ferrari was born in 1910 in Marseille into a modest family. Drawn to painting from a young age, he moved to Paris at just seventeen, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts while working in theater set design workshops. Recognized for his talent, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne as early as 1927 and received several important awards in the 1930s, including the Stanislas Torrents Prize, the Claverie Prize, and most notably the prestigious Abd-el-Tif Prize, which granted him an artist residency in Algeria. This Mediterranean sojourn had a lasting influence on his palette, characterized by a frank, luminous, and colorful expression. After the Second World War, Ferrari exhibited regularly in Paris and Marseille, establishing himself as a major figure in modern Provençal painting. His work, both energetic and sensitive, explores landscapes of the South as well as seascapes, still lifes, portraits, and large nudes. In 1968, he returned to settle permanently in Marseille, where he continued a prolific and distinctive artistic output. A major retrospective at the Vieille Charité in 1975 cemented his importance on the regional art scene. Antoine Ferrari passed away in 1995, leaving behind a colorful, vibrant, and sophisticated body of work that testifies to a powerful vision of light and Mediterranean life. Today, his paintings remain appreciated for their spontaneity, expressive force, and their grounding in the 20th-century pictorial tradition.
