Biography:
After an international career in the shipbuilding industry, Pierre Bernay has devoted himself to marine painting for the past 10 years, inspired by his numerous visits and travels in the maritime world and by his sailing experiences along the French coast and in distant waters, including an expedition to Antarctica in 2017.
Trained in academic painting at the Princeton Academy of Arts in the United States, Pierre has also developed his craft through interaction with American marine painters from the American Society of Marine Artists, of which he has been a signatory member since 2015. His figurative style is combined with a more spontaneous and expressive French-style touch that allows light to play a major role in revealing forms; his brushstrokes—sometimes bold, sometimes soft—offer the viewer a unique perspective on the subject.
Based in Montreuil-Bellay (Maine-et-Loire, 49), Pierre spends most of his time painting from life, either outdoors or in his studio, and readily displays his fondness for stormy weather and rough seas.
