Japanese Tansu Commode In Keyaki & Paulownia – Early 20th Century
Superb early 20th-century Japanese Tansu chest of drawers, crafted from keyaki (Japanese elm) for the fronts and most frequently used parts, and paulownia (kiri) for the drawer interiors and structural elements, as is traditional in high-quality furniture. The piece displays the strong visual presence typical of keyaki, recognizable by its dense grain, warm reddish-brown hue, and exceptional sturdiness. The richly decorated wrought iron fittings echo the floral and symbolic motifs found on Isho-dansu and Sendai-dansu chests, two similar types designed for storing clothing and personal belongings. This chest also features a side compartment with small drawers and a trunk, characteristic of models used for travel and transporting valuables. Good overall condition, complete fittings, some signs of wear consistent with a piece of travel furniture. Dimensions: - Height 86 cm - Width 116 cm - Depth 43 cm
