Object description :

"Empire Gilt Bronze Clock “troubadour And Love”, Chapuy, Early 19th Century"
This Empire-style gilt bronze clock depicts a young troubadour playing the lyre, accompanied by a winged Cupid. The case is made of fire-gilt bronze and rests on a Verde Antico marble base. The enamel dial is signed Chapuy, Rue Vivienne No. 4, a Parisian clockmaker active in the early 19th century. The refined modeling and musical iconography show strong affinities with the creations of the renowned bronze sculptor Claude Galle (1759–1846). A comparable model, also signed Galle, was offered for sale at Christie's London (The Connoisseur's Library Sale, February 2023). On the front, a poetic inscription is engraved: "The troubadour in his childhood /Sweet song of love sang /But when adolescence came /Love in its turn he favored." The clock is preserved in excellent original condition.
