The figure is captured in a dynamic and elegant pose, gracefully balancing on one foot, resting on the head of Zephyr, the god of the west wind. The model is based on the legendary creation by Giambologna (1529–1608), one of the most illustrious sculptors of the late Renaissance. First executed around 1564 in Florence, the original work was revolutionary in its sense of movement and lightness, a technical and artistic feat for the time.
