The Death of General Wolfe, Battle of Quebec 1759, 18th Century. By Benjamin West (1738-1820). Large 18th-century scene depicting the death of General Wolfe, oil on panel. A work of excellent quality, this historical scene shows General Wolfe in his death throes, surrounded by his officers, each mortally wounded by three musket shots. The work symbolizes the heroism and martyrdom of Wolfe, who died on the battlefield during the victory over the French. A near life-size version is held at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. West produced several versions of this work during this period. Presented in an antique gilt frame. Dimensions: approximately 81.3 cm x 72.4 cm (framed).
