Large Painted Canvas With A Turkish Motif, Suitable For Use As A Tapestry - 19th Century
Large silk or cotton canvas, stenciled like wallpaper. It depicts a scene in Turkey with Orientals engaged in their commercial activities, drinking tea, in a city (Istanbul?) with a minaret. The scene is framed within a grisaille printed frieze in the style of an Orientalist motif. Mid-19th century, circa 1840-50. A beautiful decorative accessory, reflecting the fashion for Turkish style, popular from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, and very fashionable among high society seeking exoticism, as exemplified by Alexandre Dumas's *The Count of Monte Cristo*. In this setting, we have used it to create a Turkish-style bedroom. It can also be hung in a living room, entryway, or stairwell. Width: 95 cm Height: 187 cm
