Biedermeier Lyra Secretary Desk, Circa 1830
A finely crafted Biedermeier-style Lyra secretary desk, featuring an oval upper section with a narrow drawer and a small, contoured pedestal. The piece rests on a concave base, flanked by lion's paw feet adorned with carved acanthus leaves, with a shelf between them. A wide drawer surmounts the upper section. The oval door, mirrored on the exterior and lined with green leather on the interior, opens to a richly detailed interior, architecturally divided into three compartments decorated with pointed arches, quatrefoils, and Gothic-style keystones. The central compartment opens via a mechanism concealed within the lower drawer. Mirrored diamond moldings enliven the dark interior. The lower section is decorated with stylized bossage. The drawer, fitted with a mirrored arched panel, is compartmentalized for writing instruments. Made of walnut and light maple, and inlaid with fine brass strips, this piece of furniture has been expertly restored and hand-polished – an outstanding example of the refinement of Biedermeier craftsmanship.
