Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941) On The Old Port Of Marseille

Artist: Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941)
The most coveted subject for collectors of Marseilles painters: the Old Port and the activity that took place there in the 19th century.
On the Quai de Rive Neuve, where the artist had his studio, in the tranquility of early morning, on a calm stretch of water that the Provençals call a "sea of oil," a few figures are busy loading a schooner, while harnessed horses wait patiently, their sacks of oats on their noses, for their driver's orders.
In the background to the left is the Palais du Pharo, and to the right, Fort Saint Jean and its King René Tower, the Saint Laurent district with its distinctive church, and the Customs buildings partially obscured by the schooner's sails.
The work is presented in a modern American-style frame with a rust patina, measuring 80 cm by 92 cm, and 73 cm by 85 cm for the canvas alone.
In good condition, with some minor, old craquelure, normal for a work of this size and period, it is signed lower left.

Joseph Garibaldi presents here a superb example of this era, making this painting both anecdotal and historical.
Joseph Garibaldi exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1884 to 1914, where he received an honorable mention in 1887 and a second-class medal in 1897.
His works are primarily views of famous sites and monuments, and coastal ports: Cassis, where he painted regularly between 1884 and 1899; La Ciotat, where he was hosted by Antoine Lumière; Bandol; Sanary; and Toulon.
But his specialty remained the Old Port of Marseille.
Until 1905, he benefited from the patronage of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905), who, guided by the critic Paul Leroy, a great supporter of Vollon's students, bought his paintings and donated them to provincial museums.
He exhibited his landscapes at the Colonial Exhibition in Marseille in 1906 and obtained a travel grant for Tunisia in 1907. Throughout the rest of his career, he was supported by his friends from the Association of Marseilles Artists (Étienne Martin, José Silbert, and Édouard Crémieux), who successively led the association...
