Jean Aubery (1880-1952) Marseille, La Corniche And The Hotel Peron

Artist: Jean Aubéry (1880-1952)
A free and modern touch, a refined and sober design, no superfluous details, only the essentials for this work by the Marseille painter Jean Aubéry. The work is made in oil on canvas mounted on a wooden panel, it is offered in a pretty Louis XIV style frame with a faded patina which measures 54.5 cm by 62.5 cm and 33 cm by 41 cm for the canvas alone. It represents the Corniche in Marseille, at the level of the Anse des Catalans overlooked today by the Cercle des Nageurs opposite the Hotel Peron. A luminous work in shimmering colors, a beautiful representation of a district of Marseille from the 1930s. In good condition, it is signed lower right.

Jean Aubéry went from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Marseille to the Parisian workshops of Gérome, Himbert and Duffaud and was laureate in 1904 of the Chenavard prize for his “Retour de Pêche”. A drawing teacher at the Société de l'Enseignement Moderne, he felt nostalgic for his "country" and returned to Marseille. He was then found in all the Local Salons and at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1905 to 1940, where he obtained numerous awards: "Honorable Mention", Paul Liot Prize, and Silver Medal in 1931, Cyrille Besset Prize in 1934, and Gold Medal in 1937 for “Le Quai de Rive Neuve Marseille” and “Dans mon jardin”. He was noticed early on for the solid drawing, the powerful modeling, the lively construction of subjects such as: "the salt unloaders", "the lavender pickers". At the Draguignan Museum: "L'Estaque" At the Marseille Museum of Fine Arts: "Porteurs de lavandes", "Calanque de Niolon" At the Regards de Provence Foundation "Port de Cassis" and "L'Estaque"
