Siddhartha Gautama (Sanskrit; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama), more commonly referred to as the Buddha ("the Awakened One"), sometimes as Shakyamuni (the "sage of the Shakyas"), is a spiritual master who lived in the 6th century BC or the 5th century BC. J.-C., historical founder of a community of wandering monks who gave birth to Buddhism. He is said to have been born in Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, on the road to Kapilavastu, the capital of his family clan, in what is now the Nepalese Terai, to Mayadevī and Śuddhodana, ruler of the Śākyas belonging to the Kshatriya caste of warriors and administrators, and was active in the states of Kosala and Magadha in northeastern India. He is said to have lived for about eighty years, but traditions do not agree on the exact dates of his life, which modern research tends to place later and later: around 623-543 BCE according to the Theravada tradition, around 563-483 BCE. According to most early 20th-century specialists, and many in the early 21st century, parinirvana (the Buddha's death) occurred between 420 and 380 BCE. Dimensions: 34 x 29 x 18 cm.
