"Pair Of Neapolitan Beggars – Terracotta And Oilcloth – Early 19th Century"
A charming pair of Neapolitan beggars in polychrome terracotta, their expressions remarkably realistic. Their finely rendered and humane faces are typical of the early 19th-century Neapolitan “presepi” tradition (popular nativity scenes of Southern Italy). The figures are dressed in oilcloth and antique fabrics, patinated by time, and mounted on wooden bases. A beautiful presence and a moving testament to the skill of Neapolitan artisans, blending sacred and folk art. Southern Italy, circa 1820-1840. Height: 34 cm. Materials: terracotta, textile, wood. Original polychromy and patina. Good overall condition, with some wear consistent with age.
