17th century
Exquisite bronze mortar with a flared shape on a slight foot (the minor losses at the edge of the foot are original casting flaws).
The thicker neck is decorated with two simple registers, the upper one marked around its perimeter with simple dots.
The body of the mortar is adorned with a frieze alternating:
* cartouches framed by drapery swags, with a mascaron head in the center, purely in the Louis XIV style
* fleur-de-lis
* three curled dolphins, arranged in a downward-facing triangle.
These medallions are all well-defined and of very high quality. This motif is repeated, each time maintaining perfect symmetry.
A very nice overall brown patina.
