FOLK ART

Important and large wrought iron stone mason's compass, chiseled and engraved on its flats in an amusing way with the various tools of his corporation: plumb line, chisel and burin, mallet, square and compass, hammers,
and on the other side the initials JB in half circles (those of the master carpenter?)

Louis XIV period, late 17th or early 18th century

The points of the compass are entirely chiseled with zoomorphic heads reproducing the medieval motif of the engoulant beams, 2 dragon mouths literally swallowing in their mouths the round segment of the points of the compass. These engoulant beams were precisely key pieces of carpentry installed during the construction of buildings in the Middle Ages.

Dimensions:
58 cm length
3 cm width
and approximately 2 cm thickness
