"Orientalist Oil Portrait, Seraillon, Algiers, Algeria, Berber Kabyle Child, Little Boy, Africa"
Oil on parchment or animal skin depicting a mother and her young son by the Orientalist painter Benjamin Seraillon. This painter was born in Lyon in 1902, where he studied painting at the School of Fine Arts. In 1924, he moved to Algeria with his wife and settled in Algiers, where he opened a drawing studio. In 1925, he was introduced to the Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet, who took an interest in his work and offered him advice. For four years, he studied under the Flemish painter Jules Van Briesbroeck. He joined the Society of Orientalist Painters and began exhibiting in various local art societies. From 1932 to 1962, he exhibited in Algiers. He was a painter, but also a book illustrator and lithographer. He masterfully depicted the lives and customs of Algerian tribes in his highly realistic paintings. In 1962, he returned to France and settled in the South. This oil painting is presented in a lovely Montparnasse-style wooden frame and protected by glass. A wooden panel reinforces the piece on the back. The colors are very vibrant.
