"Natsume, Japanese Lacquered Tea Caddy Hikibune - Japan"
A tea caddy, or natsume, for matcha tea in the tea ceremony. Made of black lacquered wood with a "hikibune" decoration depicting figures pulling a boat in gold and silver makie lacquer. The boat is hidden beneath the lid. The three figures are dressed in rice straw (mino) raincoats. For the tea ceremony, the tea master chooses his objects according to the season, guests, and events. This natsume relates to the rainy season (June). A unique piece with its decoration hidden under the lid. Artist: Chikuryo Chikushiro, born in 1950. Japan, circa 1990, 7.6 x 7.3 cm.
