Historical Context
Under Leo I, the solidus became the monetary standard of the Late Mediterranean world.
The three-quarter military bust embodies imperial sovereignty, while the Victory with the cross symbolizes the alliance of power and faith.
The mark CONOB (from obryzum, “pure gold”) certifies the purity of the metal and the authority of the Constantinople mint, the economic heart of the Byzantine Empire.
Formal and Material Analysis
Iconography: Military bust of remarkable precision; helmet pearls, woven cuirass, and Victory’s drapery clearly defined.
Technical reading: Vigorous strike, continuous border, regular fields, no casting seams — evidence of authentic ancient minting.
Mint markers: Officina Γ clearly visible on reverse; flawless CONOB mark consistent with Byzantine control standards.
Temporal signature: Fine preparation striations and micro-traces of use enrich the texture, reinforcing both authenticity and museum presence.
