French painter, engraver, lithographer and fresco artist, Émile Marie Beaume was born in Pézenas in 1888 in a deeply artistic environment.
His father, the writer Georges Beaume, rubbed shoulders with Alphonse Daudet, Pierre Loti and Marshal Lyautey, figures who awakened in the young Émile an early taste for drawing, travel and the Orient.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he attended the studios of Cormont, Déchenauld, François Flameng and Marcel Baschet, where he perfected his mastery of composition and portraiture.
Mobilized during the First World War, he put his talents to the service of the army's cartographic corps before discovering Morocco in 1917—a revelation that would have a lasting impact on his work.
Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1921, he stayed at the Villa Medici, then distinguished himself as a master of frescoes and monumental decoration. His compositions adorned numerous public and private buildings in France and the colonial empire, notably at the Colonial Exhibition of 1931 and the International Exhibition of 1937.
A tireless traveler, Beaume drew his inspiration from the landscapes and faces of North Africa and Black Africa, which he translated into a rigorous and luminous style.
A professor at the Gobelins, he passed on his passion for color and monumental composition. Until the end of his life, he continued his work between France and Africa, decorating palaces and institutions.
Émile Marie Beaume died in 1967. Part of his studio was bequeathed to the Pézenas museum, where part of his work is preserved today.
Part of the studio is of family origin.
