"China – Polychrome Terracotta Owl – Han Dynasty"
Terracotta owl with polychromy pigments. It is standing sideways with open eyes. In China, the owl symbolizes wisdom and luck, partly because its name can be homophonous with auspicious terms. It is also associated with protection and can represent transformation. Reference: Similar model in the book "Chinese porcelain" by Michel Beurdeley Pl6,p.53 (Guimet Museum) Origin: China. Period: Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220). Dimensions: Height: 18 cm; width: 9 cm. Conditions: Good general condition, nice preservation of the polychromy. Provenance: Former Belgian collection.
