This oil painting depicting an Arabian racehorse named "Abdelkadr" in the stable was created in 1855 by the prominent German equestrian painter Emil Volkers (1831, Birkenfeld - Düsseldorf, 1905).
Emil Volkers was one of the finest animal painters of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, specializing in the depiction of horses.
He studied at the Dresden Academy before continuing his training in Munich with the prestigious equestrian painters A. and F. Adam, and later making study trips to Italy and Romania. In 1855, he created his first horse paintings for the Oldenburger Hof, which earned him a reputation as an exceptional equestrian painter. Very quickly, other commissions from other stud farms followed. In addition to genre documentaries featuring horses and horse portraits, Volkers also painted portraits, folk motifs from popular life, and hunting, sporting, and maneuvering scenes. Volker's paintings were acquired by private clients and museums. In Germany, Volker's works were exhibited for the Art Gallery Wiesbaden and the Wallraff-Richartz Museum in Cologne. Many of his paintings were already in 19th-century English and American collections. Emil Volkers discovered his passion for horses in his youth. He spent much of his free time at the Birkenfeld post office, where he constantly had horses as models for his drawings. Before and after the turn of the century, Volkers devoted himself primarily to documentary portraits of horses, which were well received, especially by racehorse owners. Volkers depicts the horse's body with great precision, creating an almost haptic interface with the fur. Given his pictorial precision, it is not surprising that Volkers also produced illustrations for equestrian essays, such as the work "Exquisite Horse Breeds of Europe" published in 1869.
