Hairdressing Cabinet In Precious Wood And Bronze. China, Qing Dynasty.
Artist: Zitan
This small piece of furniture is made of very hard and heavy precious wood with a very fine grain. The mounts are cut from bronze or brass, some of which are inlaid into the wood, which is a beautiful dark reddish-brown color with dark, almost black veins (see photos of the cleaned wood). The piece is completely disassembled, but it is almost complete. A photo of the whole piece shows the two small missing crosspieces, and another photo shows the remains of one of the four bronze mounts (now missing) that held the base together.
This is a beautiful piece of cabinetmaking; all the elements are held together with dovetails and tenons. The dividing boards between the drawers are also made of the same precious wood and cut very thin (2 mm) with a handsaw (as shown in a photo).
Chinese work from the 19th century or earlier.
