Daruma Statuette In Bizen Sandstone. Japan, Edo Period, 19th Century.
Artist: Bizen
Bizen stoneware with a typical brown glaze, stained with yellow. The deity is depicted standing in a heavy cloak. Its large eyes with clipped eyelids fix us with an intense, stern, and disapproving gaze. Sculpted by an excellent artist, this Daruma is a high-end sculpture created in the Bizen kilns of the Edo period. It is impossible to date it more precisely. The body is pierced with several holes: nostrils, eyes, and ears. Two larger holes were made before firing, one underneath and one in the back. These two holes are not vents, as the natural facial features were sufficient for this purpose; it is possible they were used to introduce incense, the smoke from which would have escaped through the face, creating a halo around it. Bizen works of this quality are very rare. Height: 275 mm. Excellent condition.
