Painting Paris Montmartre From The 30s Watercolor Signed Fernand Guignier (1902-1980)

Artist: Fernand Guignier
Watercolor on paper 26 cm x 21 cm preserved under glass and sold with its frame 43 cm x 38 cm signed lower right Guignier and located Montmartre on the right. Probably the rue du chevalier La Barre painted from life in the 1930s. The artist lived there. Sold with invoice-certificate. Good condition. Painter and sculptor, Fernand Guignier belongs to this generation of Parisian artists who were able to capture, in the 1930s, the daily poetry of Montmartre. Settled on the Butte, he found an inexhaustible source of inspiration there, between diffused light and the gentle slopes. This watercolor accurately translates the tranquility of a still preserved Montmartre. Under a milky sky, the bare trees and the light facades respond to each other in an atmosphere of suspended calm. The supple touch, subtle transparencies, and balance of the composition demonstrate a complete mastery of watercolor, a medium he practiced alongside sculpture. Guignier is notably the author, in 1941, of the statue of Saint Denis carrying his head that can be admired on the hill in Suzanne Buisson Square; the plaster cast is also preserved at the Montmartre Museum. A work emblematic of his talent as a sculptor. Moreover, several of his Parisian views are now preserved at the Carnavalet Museum, dedicated to the history and image of the capital.
