Henri Darnaud (1905–1985) was a French painter, engraver, and lithographer, a leading figure of Lyon abstraction. Departing from the two major currents of lyrical abstraction and geometric abstraction, he developed a personal path of which he became a pioneer: pointillist abstraction. Pushing the pointillism and divisionism inherited from Seurat to the point of total erasure of the motif, he created compositions made solely of vibrant colors, where the represented object disappears in favor of pure sensation. A native of Lyon, he notably participated in the Salon Regain in 1976. He was also the father and mentor of the painter Maxime Darnaud, whom he initiated in his own studio. Henri Darnaud died in 1985, leaving behind a singular body of work recognized for its original contribution to French abstraction.
