Small Covered Ceramic Pot By Pierre Bayle (1945-2004)

Charming little box in sigillata terra cotta, unique piece, dated 1981 and signed Bayle under the base.

It is in very good condition. Pierre Bayle's technique and discourse were formed between Castelnaudary and Paris, before perfecting them on his return to the Minervois, in the 70s. There, he built his own kiln, and undertook research on sigillata ceramics. He uses white earth, the throwing of which he perfectly masters; he works his engobes and his firings in the manner of the master potters of Antiquity. Bayle does not paint decorations, but lets the flame decide the effect obtained from the ferruginous earths which, fired in oxidation, turn red, and fired in reduction, become black. Pierre Bayle is exhibited in France, at the Musée de Sèvres and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. He won first prize at the Châteauroux Biennale and a major exhibition was dedicated to him during the winter of 1996-1997 in Carcassonne at the Maison Joë Bousquet. In 2002, he received the Liliane Bettencourt Prize “for the intelligence of the Hand” and was decorated as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
